Our lives are the briefest spark in the timeline of the universe, but with the bones of our ancestors secure in the earth below our feet, and the night sky whirling above us, what can we do but embrace our small part in the chaos? As birds return to their roosts and moths flicker in the hedgerow, a couple walk quietly towards a Neolithic dolmen. Perhaps they will pause there a while to watch the sun disappear behind the hill and to think of the ancient hands which moved the stone they rest on. If they stay long enough, perhaps a shooting star will blaze through the sky. Or perhaps they’ll hurry home and shut out the night. I hope they wait.
